Patient Blood Management Program
Brandywine Hospital provides an innovative approach to blood management using safe and effective transfusionfree medical and surgical techniques to reduce the risks of blood transfusions, improve results and respect the needs of patients for whom blood transfusion is not an option.
Medical benefits of patient blood management and bloodless surgery
There is scientific evidence that suggests that patients who avoid transfusions have fewer complications, faster recoveries and shorter hospital stays. Benefits of patient blood management may include:
- Lower rates of the most serious postoperative complications, including heart attack, stroke and infections
- Decreased risk of immunologic complications and allergic reactions
- Less exposure to blood-borne viruses and infections
I am having surgery. What can I expect?
Based on the results of a patient’s blood test, doctors may recommend a regimen of medications and dietary supplements to help maintain optimal levels of hemoglobin (an oxygen-carrying protein in red blood cells).
Where possible, minimally invasive techniques, like laparoscopic and robotic surgeries, are used to minimize blood loss.
Blood loss will be minimized and blood production enhanced through medication and technology and by reducing the amount of blood testing.
