An angiogram tests to see if a blood vessel is clogged or has narrowed, where the constriction may be and how much it is affecting the patient. In this test, a thin tube called a catheter is inserted into the vessel through a nick in the skin about the size of the tip of a pencil and an x-ray dye called “contrast agent” is injected to make the vessel visible on x-ray film. A connected procedure, angioplasty may then be required to compress any blockages and stretch the blood vessel open.
